YOGA CHALLENGE: Goddess

Posted By Fitness on Mar 1, 2007 at 12:00PM

Are your ready for the next Yoga Challenge? The last one, Eagle pose, was all about balance, and this one is all about power and strength. That's why it's called Goddess.

Not only does this pose make you feel strong and beautiful, it helps to open your chest and hips. It also works your hamstrings and calves and the muscles in your gorgeous booty. When you strengthen the muscles in your thighs and lower legs, it helps to strengthen your knees as well. This pose involves your entire body, which is why I love it.

Be sure to get a friend to snap a picture of you doing it. Then go to THE YOGA CHALLENGE Group. If you're not a member yet, just click on the word "Subscribe," on the left-hand side. Then to post your picture, click "Create & Share," and then click on "Blog." Write a title, some keywords, upload your picture in the body (add some words if you want) and then click "Submit."

Here's how to get into Goddess:

  • Begin at the front of your mat in Mountain pose.
  • Step open to the right, so there are about 3 feet between your toes. Turn your heels in.
  • Bend your knees and squat down, eventually bringing your thighs parallel to the ground. Your knees should be directly over your ankles, so adjust your feet if you need to.
  • When you're ready, lift your arms up, bending your elbows so they are at 90 degree angles, opening your palms away from you.
  • Stay here for 5 breaths, or more if you love it.

I can't wait to check out It's a STRETCH and see your amazing pictures.

Favorite Wide-Legged Split

Posted By Fitness on Jan 16, 2007 at 12:15PM

I'm so excited that so many of you sent in your Wide-Legged Split photos to the YOGA CHALLENGE Group. There were so many awesome photos, but I had to choose the one I liked best.

Suzanne, you and you husband's photos were my favorite. There's nothing I love more than people doing yoga together - way to inspire each other. Keep it up.

What a guy is right! He did more than give it a try. I'm very impressed.

But don't worry - you all have another chance to get your photo posted on FitSugar. Here's the latest challenge called Standing Bound Split pose. It's great for practicing your balance and working your hamstrings at the same time. Get into it from Bound Forward Bend pose.

Need another yoga challenge? Try doing Crow pose too.

Can't wait to see those pics. You can post them here.

YOGA CHALLENGE: Bound Squat

Posted By Fitness on Dec 26, 2006 at 11:45AM

I hope you've all been working on opening your hips doing the wide squat pose. This week's Yoga Challenge is just a little variation on the traditional wide squat.

Give it a try. I'm looking forward to seeing the photos you post in the YOGA CHALLENGE Group.

This is how you do Bound Squat:

Start in a wide squat. Place your left hand on the ground in front of your left foot, trying to drop your left shoulder as low as you can below your knee.
  • Now wrap your left forearm in front of your left shin, trying to bring that hand up towards your left hip.
  • Now lift your right arm up as high as you can and drop it behind you, bringing your right hand towards your lower back.
  • If you can, you're going to bind around your left knee - this means your left hand grabs your right hand (grab your right wrist if you can.)
  • Stay here for 5 breaths, trying to keep equal weight in both feet. Pull your right shoulder down towards your hips so you can open through your chest.
  • Try it on the other side.

What do you think? Can't wait to see your pictures. My favorite will be featured right here on FitSugar!

Favorite Bow Pose

Posted By Fitness on Dec 22, 2006 at 4:27PM

I'm so impressed with all of you who sent in the photos of you doing Bow pose to the YOGA CHALLENGE Group. I challenged you to try this pose and you all get gold stars for your marvelous effort.

But alas, I can only choose one favorite, which was sent in from mschmidt. Not only did she try the challenge, but she did it right after dinner in her regular clothes. Now that's what I call a dedicated yogini.

You all have a chance to get your photo posted on FitSugar as well. Check out this challenging pose known as Half Moon. It'll test your sense of balance, but practicing the Triangle pose will help a lot. Good luck!

Name That Asana - Want to play?

Posted By Fitness on Dec 8, 2006 at 1:00PM

Want to play Name That Asana? It's the latest game show on Fitsugar. While it's not exactly Deal or No Deal, it is hilarious. Plus, you get to flex your mental muscle as you guess the names of different yoga poses - asana is the Sanskrit word for "pose."

There may not be prize money involved, but it is good for a few laughs. Be on the look out for more FitSugar videos. They're coming your way soon.
